LOK-Center - History and Future

LOK-Center began operations in early 2009 as a direct result of the job crisis that followed the financial crash in the U.S. in October 2008, with worldwide implications.

LOK stood for "Local Centre for Conversion and Business Operations". Since its inception, a total of thousand people participated in the conversion efforts and activities at LOK-Center, both with directions of municipality and interacting agents.

In the summer of 2010, the majority of those affected by redundancy notices in recession have been either re-employed or moved on to other jobs or training.

Since the economic upturn the focus moved to skills issues, both in the match between unemployed workers and business demand, as employees of businesses in the municipality of Sandviken.

LOK-Center currently has a partnership with the Swedish Public Employment Service, primarily in two programs - SYV- (study- and vocational guidancelänk till annan webbplats) and LYFT-program.

SYV-program is a five-week program with the goal to build upon the individual's own thoughts, ideas and abilities/conditions, to develop an action plan, to get through trials for the desired profession.

LYFT is a program for anyone who needs to get closer to employment through training, to examine in a professional practice, and then through coaching and counselling to develop an action plan to get the job directly, or through studies.
The challenge in 2011 and beyond will therefore not primarily be about business operations but the intervention skills. Therefore, this approach is now also highlighted in the business name of LOK-Center.

Still, this is a lot of conversion work, when many young people entering the labour market with the "wrong" orientation and training deficiencies in the formal jurisdiction. However, the cyclically effort is replaced with enhanced skills intervention in the coming years.
.
According to the changes in LOK-Centers approach, The Growth Committee decided to change the name of the LOK-center from "Local Centre for Conversion and Business Operations" to

"Local Centre for Conversion and Skills Action."
